The Horrorist - Take This Step EP
Dark legend The Horrorist returns with more EBM infused with the hardcore spirit.
The Original Mix is an exercise in paranoia and tension where the synths constantly sound as if they’re going to go higher again, and they usually do. The Mark Hawkins Mix is full of distorted 909 kick patterns with backwards kick fills and stuttery patterns - which is the sort of thing I love. The Pet Duo deliver a bruising and fast reverb kicked mix with lots of stutter fills and tapestop type fills. Brain Burger’s remix starts very subtly but explodes into the sky once the main breakdown/build comes in. Gabba legend (and the man also responsible for the classic ‘Just As Long As I Got You’ with Frankie Bones) Lenny Dee delivers what could be described as Gabba Hop, where the usual 808 in the slow beat is replaced by a massive distorted 909. The looping of the synth lead gives a real siren type sound to the track, and stutter inputs of the vocal samples give it that classic old skool sampler feel - fucking great.
Heavy and dark sounds from start to finish. Brilliance.

When I set up my Belgian New Beat group on Soundcloud 2 years ago, I seriously never thought there would be any ‘new’ New Beat tracks sent to it, and mainly I was just putting my New Beat mix up there hoping that people would upload old New Beat mixtapes etc. (which has happened a lot and that is great).
Right now there are 12 actual new tracks or remixes of New Beat classics in the group and 9 great New Beat mixes, including classic Boccaccio recordings - this is just to say thank you to everyone that has contributed to the group.
